Stellantis and Microsoft have announced a five-year strategic partnership to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and engineering capabilities. This collaboration comes as Stellantis aims to stay competitive with technology-focused rivals in the automotive industry. The importance of software and data-driven services has grown significantly in the long-term strategies of automotive companies, especially as Chinese automakers ramp up efforts to attract customers both locally and internationally.
Traditional automakers, often facing challenges in software and tech development, are increasingly seeking partnerships with technology firms to enhance their capabilities and accelerate innovation. Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Ned Curic, highlighted the acceleration of their AI initiatives across the enterprise through the partnership with Microsoft.
The agreement between Stellantis and Microsoft focuses on co-developing over 100 AI initiatives, including areas such as product development, predictive maintenance, and the rapid deployment of digital features and services. Additionally, the collaboration aims to strengthen Stellantis’ global cyber defense center using AI-driven analytics to bolster cybersecurity measures for vehicles, customer data, and operations worldwide.
This partnership builds upon the existing relationship between Stellantis and Microsoft, with previous collaboration on connected vehicle platforms and in-car digital services. As part of the agreement, Stellantis will leverage Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to modernize its IT infrastructure, targeting a 60% reduction in its data center footprint by 2029. Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.
