American skiers continue to excel in the World Cup circuit, with Mikaela Shiffrin dominating in slalom and Lindsey Vonn showcasing her prowess in downhill at the age of 41. The U.S. women’s team is making a significant impact ahead of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, which are just over three weeks away.
In another impressive display, Shiffrin and Minnesota native Paula Moltzan secured first and second place, respectively, in a night slalom event in Flachau, Austria. This marks the second time in four days that two Americans have graced the podium at a World Cup race.
Shiffrin, who has now triumphed in six out of seven slaloms this season, extended her lead to finish in first place with a time of 1:50.52, followed closely by Moltzan. Katharina Truppe of Austria clinched third place, with Swiss racer Camille Rast finishing fourth.
With only one more slalom race remaining before the Winter Games commence, Shiffrin celebrated her 107th World Cup victory, including her 70th in slalom and sixth in Flachau. Meanwhile, Moltzan, still chasing her first win, secured her fourth second-place finish and third podium result of the season.
The Canadian contingent also put on a competitive show, with Toronto’s Ali Nullmeyer finishing as the top Canadian in 21st place. Kiki Alexander of Cochrane, Alta., faced disappointment along with 28 other athletes who did not finish the opening run, while Amelia Smart of Invermere, B.C., was disqualified for undisclosed reasons.
