“Montreal Adults’ Leisure Screen Time Soars”

Adults in Montreal are dedicating more of their free time to screen usage since 2018, as per the city’s public health authorities. A recent study by the local public health department of CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal reveals a 13% increase in the number of individuals engaging with screens for over two hours daily for leisure activities between 2018 and 2025.

The data, gathered from a survey on gambling and screen habits among Montreal adults conducted between March and June 2025, involved 4,002 adults on the Island of Montreal. The study, a collaboration between the regional public health department and Concordia University, sheds light on the following key findings.

The research indicates a rise in intensive leisure screen use, defined as exceeding four hours daily, from 16% in 2018 to 23% in 2025. This pattern is more prevalent among young adults aged 18 to 24 and individuals aged 65 and above. Furthermore, it correlates with income levels, living arrangements, and reduced engagement in physical leisure activities. Health officials caution that this surge may negatively impact the physical well-being of Montreal adults.

The report emphasizes that while balanced screen use is not problematic, excessive screen time during leisure activities can have adverse effects on various aspects of life, such as sleep, physical activity, work performance, and academic motivation. Interestingly, the study reveals that perceived negative impacts are not solely tied to the duration of screen time, suggesting that other factors play a role in determining harmful effects beyond just the hours spent online.

Regarding individuals’ perceptions of their digital habits, a significant portion of Montreal adults believe that screen usage contributes positively to their overall well-being and quality of life. Specifically, 44% report favorable effects, while 18% mention predominantly negative consequences. Seniors and individuals living alone are more likely to view their digital habits positively, possibly due to increased free time availability. Conversely, those residing with children under 18 are less inclined to acknowledge the benefits of screen use.

In conclusion, the study underscores the growing prevalence of screen usage among Montreal adults and emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts to promote healthier lifestyles while considering screen consumption habits.
