Former Liberal cabinet minister Kirsty Duncan has passed away at 59 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Duncan, born on October 31, 1966, served as the Liberal MP for Etobicoke North in Toronto for five terms from 2008 to 2025. During her tenure, she held positions in the cabinet under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including roles as the Minister of Science and Sport, as well as a brief stint as the Minister for Persons with Disabilities.
In January 2023, Duncan took a medical leave but continued her duties as an MP until she decided not to seek re-election the following year. Despite her short time as the Minister of Sport, Duncan prioritized promoting safe sport practices and remained a staunch advocate for the cause.
Following her passing, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, highlighting Duncan’s life of kindness and service. Carney praised her background as a teacher and scientist, mentioning her renowned Arctic expedition to investigate the origins of the 1918 influenza pandemic. He commended her contributions to education and her impactful political career, emphasizing her efforts in breaking barriers and advancing scientific research in Parliament.
Trudeau also mourned Duncan’s death, describing her as a friend and a beacon of knowledge, compassion, and service. Ontario Premier Doug Ford joined in expressing his sadness over the loss, recognizing Duncan’s dedication to public service and her constituents.
The House of Commons in Ottawa paid tribute to Duncan by observing a moment of silence, with Assistant Deputy Speaker John Nater leading the parliamentarians in honoring her memory. Nater acknowledged Duncan’s hard work, courage, and kindness, expressing love and support to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
