Calypso Icon The Mighty Sparrow Dies at 91

The influential calypso music figure known as The Mighty Sparrow has passed away at the age of 91. Born Slinger Francisco, he died peacefully in New York after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. Recognized for his talents as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, Francisco was hailed as an icon in the entertainment industry by his family.

Originally from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco moved to Trinidad and Tobago as a young child, where he would later become synonymous with calypso music. With hits like “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” and “Congo Man,” The Mighty Sparrow’s music resonated globally, carrying the spirit and stories of his people.

Trinidad and Tobago honored Francisco with national awards, and in 1987, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies. Leaders from Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica paid tribute to his legacy, highlighting his impact on Caribbean culture.

Throughout his six-decade career, Francisco recorded hundreds of songs and performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including Madison Square Garden in New York City. Known for his party anthems and politically charged tracks like “Model Nation” and “Martin Luther King For President,” The Mighty Sparrow’s music touched generations and celebrated cultural events like Toronto’s Caribana festival.

Even in his passing, The Mighty Sparrow’s dedication to advancing the art of calypso music remains a lasting legacy, as noted by Trinidadian cultural historian Rudolph Ottley. His contributions as a cultural revolutionary and legendary calypsonian have left an indelible mark on the music world.
