Canadian Armed Forces helicopters are currently conducting Exercise STRIKING BAT, a major combat training event aimed at preparing military forces for operations in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. The exercise, involving six CH-146 Griffin helicopters, will be visible and audible to residents in northwest Alberta, northeast British Columbia, and southwest Yukon from January 26 to 28. The helicopters will be flying at altitudes as low as 500 feet during this period.
This year’s exercise is taking place at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and will see Canadian forces collaborating with units from the United States, Norway, Italy, and Mongolia. Previous editions of STRIKING BAT were held in Fort Wainwright in 2024 and Twentynine Palms, California, in 2021.
The event coincides with recent concerns over U.S. cooperation with traditional military allies in the Arctic. U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about potential tariffs on European countries involved in exercises in Greenland have raised questions about the future of military partnerships in the region.
In a recent interview with CBC News, Gen. Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, discussed the importance of continued military cooperation between Canada and the United States. She emphasized the shared responsibility of defending the continent and the necessity of maintaining open communication channels between the two countries for effective collaboration.
Despite potential disagreements, Carignan highlighted the ongoing discussions and cooperation between the military forces of Canada and the United States. She stressed the importance of understanding each other’s perspectives to enhance joint defense efforts.
