“Arctic Cold Front Grips Western Canada, Manitoba Hits -50°C Wind Chill”

An Arctic cold front sweeping through North America is bringing frigid temperatures to Western Canada, as reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The severe cold, expected to persist through the weekend, is predominantly affecting the Prairies, with areas in northwestern Ontario, Nunavut, and most of Saskatchewan and Manitoba currently under orange weather warnings. Manitoba is experiencing wind chill values ranging from -45 to -50 degrees Celsius until Monday, as stated by the government agency.

The ECCC warning emphasized the rapid onset of frostbite on exposed skin, particularly in windy conditions, advising individuals to store emergency supplies like extra blankets and jumper cables in their vehicles. In Northwestern Alberta, wind chill values are forecasted to reach between -40 and -50 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while northwestern Ontario anticipates enduring a prolonged period of extremely cold wind chills.

ECCC suggests that outdoor workers take regular breaks to warm up during these extreme conditions. They recommend dressing in layers that can be easily removed if overheating occurs and wearing outer garments that provide wind resistance. ECCC meteorologist Natalie Hasell noted that although this weather event may not set temperature records, the severity of the cold has made the polar vortex significantly impactful in southern and central Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Hasell explained that the polar vortex’s position over Quebec is driving frigid air southward across the Prairies without any geographical barriers to impede its flow, intensifying the cold conditions in the region. Additionally, ECCC issued yellow-level snow squall warnings in parts of Quebec, including Montreal, as well as northern and southwestern Ontario.
