“Olympic Speed Skaters to Compete on Indoor Ice for First Time”

Speed skating ice is known for being the coldest and hardest type of ice. Historically, Olympic speed skaters have always competed on permanent outdoor tracks. However, the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games mark the first time they will compete for gold on a temporary indoor rink.

To ensure optimal glide and minimal friction, Olympic officials enlisted the expertise of ice master Mark Messer. With a wealth of experience overseeing six previous Olympic speed skating tracks, including the renowned Olympic Oval in Calgary, Messer has been meticulously crafting the ice at the new Speed Skating Stadium in Rho, just north of Milan, since late October.

Creating the perfect speed skating ice has posed a significant challenge for Messer. Unlike other types of ice, such as hockey or figure skating ice, speed skating ice must be exceptionally hard, cold, and clean to meet the sport’s demanding requirements. Any impurities on the ice can hinder skaters’ performance by affecting the sharpness of their blades and, consequently, their speed.

Enrico Fabris, a former Olympic speed skater turned deputy sports manager at the speed skating venue in Rho, emphasizes the importance of uniform ice conditions for all skaters. For him, ideal ice conditions not only level the playing field but also enhance the skaters’ experience on the track.

Messer’s meticulous process involves carefully layering water on the ice surface, painting it white, and adding lane markings. As the ice thickness increases, additional layers are applied to achieve the desired stability. Maintaining a clean surface is crucial to reduce friction and optimize skaters’ performance. The Zamboni ice resurfacing machine plays a vital role in this process by ensuring the track remains smooth and free of debris.

Despite facing challenges such as adjusting to the temporary rink and fine-tuning the ice conditions, Messer remains focused on providing the best possible environment for the athletes. As the Winter Games draw closer, the final adjustments and ongoing monitoring of air and ice temperatures will be crucial to ensuring a successful competition for all speed skaters.
