Erin’s Pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador had an unusual Saturday recently when business owner Allan Bearns took the stage for a unique community event. Instead of a musical performance, Bearns embarked on a marathon reading session of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel, “The Hobbit,” with the aim of raising funds for The Gathering Place, a local organization assisting the homeless.
In celebration of Tolkien’s birthday, Bearns drew inspiration from the themes of friendship and adventure in the book to support those in need. He emphasized the essence of Tolkien’s narratives in showcasing the best of humanity and ordinary individuals rising to extraordinary challenges.
Reflecting on his personal experiences with homelessness, Bearns shared that he had faced periods of housing instability in the past, highlighting the diverse forms that homelessness can take. Despite the lighthearted nature of his fundraising idea, Bearns underscored the seriousness of the homelessness issue and praised The Gathering Place for its efforts in combating this societal challenge.
After an arduous 11-hour reading session, Bearns successfully completed “The Hobbit,” raising $1,292 for The Gathering Place. His dedication to the cause and creative approach to fundraising demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting the community and addressing pressing social issues.
