Yukon Energy Pursues Solutions for Generator Noise

New technologies and sound control devices are being explored by the Yukon Energy Corporation to address the noise disturbances caused by diesel generators in a Whitehorse neighborhood. A petition, with almost 200 signatures, was presented in the legislature by frustrated Riverdale residents seeking noise regulations for electricity production in several Yukon areas. The petition urges the Yukon Legislative Assembly to enforce noise emission regulations, including setting limits on frequency and volume, and calls on the Yukon Energy Corporation to reduce noise from both existing and future generators.

During the winter months, when diesel generators are most active, the environmental minister acknowledged the impact of noise pollution on residents. In response to the petition, Minister Wade Istchenko stated that Yukon Energy is already taking steps to address the issue. The corporation is conducting a design study on noise mitigation strategies, engaging in procurement activities, and installing new equipment.

Yukon Energy’s Vice-president of planning, health, and safety, Michael Muller, stated that they are working with engineering firms to identify noise sources and implement measures to reduce noise levels successfully. Muller refuted claims made in the petition regarding the continuous operation of diesel generators, stating that efforts were made last winter to minimize their use, especially during nighttime hours.

A recent call for proposals aims to replace outdated silencers on four generators at Whitehorse rapids, while the upcoming Whitehorse power centers project will relocate newer generators away from residential areas with enhanced noise reduction features. The long-term goal is to have sufficient generation capacity to only use diesel generators during emergencies, minimizing noise disruptions for residents.

NDP MLA Justin Ziegler raised concerns about the mental health implications of prolonged exposure to generator noise in Riverdale and other affected areas. He emphasized the importance of ensuring future electricity production meets acceptable noise standards to protect residents’ well-being. Ziegler expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the Whitehorse power plant project in addressing the noise issues.
