CPR wasn’t enough to save Ron Snook’s life, but it did provide his family with a meaningful opportunity to bid him farewell properly.
Renée Poirier, Snook’s stepdaughter, reflected on the significance of the situation. Had they received the call confirming his passing at 1:09 a.m., the outcome would have been vastly different. The timely intervention of a Good Samaritan who administered CPR granted them the chance to say their goodbyes to their grandfather.
On New Year’s Eve, Ron Snook collapsed on King Street in Kitchener. Despite his prolonged battle with chronic kidney disease and numerous prior close calls, this incident was distinct. Excessive potassium levels in his body caused his heart to stop, resulting in kidney failure.
Snook’s family acknowledged that if it weren’t for the stranger who performed CPR, it would have marked the end. The act of kindness extended Snook a few additional hours of life, enabling paramedics to transfer him to the hospital for further treatment. This extra time allowed his loved ones to gather around him with love and warmth for a final farewell before his heart ceased beating three days later, just shy of his upcoming birthday.
Poirier emphasized the family’s quest to locate the unidentified individual who administered CPR to her stepfather. The search commenced with a Facebook post by Victoria Lee, another stepdaughter of Snook, expressing gratitude for the Good Samaritan’s actions and the precious time they afforded the family.
Although the social media appeal has not yet led to identifying the Good Samaritan, Poirier remains hopeful of expressing their gratitude in person. She stressed the importance of knowing CPR, underscoring how it can be a life-changing skill. Snook was recognized for his community involvement, often engaging in acts of kindness like shoveling snow for neighbors or tidying their yards.
Lou Taddeo, the regional manager for St. John Ambulance Ontario, shared insights on the significance of CPR training. Drawing from his experience as a medical first responder, Taddeo highlighted the mixed emotions elicited by Snook’s situation, emphasizing the importance of being prepared to perform CPR in critical situations to maximize positive outcomes and provide closure for loved ones.
