“Rising Pollen Levels Worsen Allergy Seasons for Canadians”

Seasonal allergies are causing familiar symptoms like headaches, congestion, itchy eyes, and runny noses in Canadians as the weather warms up. Dr. Moshe Ben-Shoshan from the Montreal Children’s Hospital notes that allergy season has commenced, leading to an increase in patients experiencing hay fever, asthma, and eczema symptoms due to higher pollen levels.

Experts emphasize that allergy seasons are worsening due to climate change, resulting in longer and more severe periods with higher pollen counts. Factors such as pollution, shifts in carbon dioxide levels, and light pollution in urban areas are believed to contribute to extended pollen seasons. Studies have shown a significant increase in pollen rates over the years in various cities globally, indicating a direct link between rising temperatures and public health concerns.

Regions like Vancouver and Victoria are expected to face a surge in tree pollen allergies this spring, with Aerobiology Research Laboratories reporting elevated pollen levels in these areas. Ontario cities like Barrie, Kingston, and Hamilton are also identified as allergy hot spots, with Windsor ranking as the most challenging location due to the overlapping pollen seasons.

To manage seasonal allergies, experts recommend a combination of prevention measures, over-the-counter medications, and emerging treatments. Desensitization therapies, including sublingual immunotherapy tablets, offer long-term tolerance to allergens like grass and ragweed. These treatments are becoming popular for their convenience and effectiveness, particularly for children.

In severe cases, targeted biologic drugs can be an option to block specific antibodies or immune responses causing allergic reactions. It is crucial for allergy sufferers to undergo testing by allergists to identify triggers, rule out underlying health conditions, and determine the best course of treatment for their allergies.
