“PQ’s Sovereignty Push Prompts Federal Strategy Shift”

The Parti Québécois has maintained a significant lead in the polls for almost two years, with leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon pledging to initiate a referendum on Quebec sovereignty within his first term. This political landscape has sparked discussions within Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government on how to address the PQ’s stance in Quebec City. Sources from Radio-Canada revealed that officials in Ottawa, including the Prime Minister’s office, his Quebec liaison, and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, have engaged in these deliberations to ensure a consistent message from federal elected representatives.

Although the PQ currently holds a substantial lead in the polls, the outcome of Plamondon’s potential election in the scheduled October 2026 provincial vote remains uncertain. To avoid being caught off guard, the federal government aims to proactively address the situation and maintain a unified approach, refraining from acting as a counterbalance to the PQ, which is deemed the responsibility of the Quebec Liberal Party.

With the changing dynamics and increased support for the “yes” option, particularly among social media influencers, the federal government is contemplating strategies to appeal to younger demographics and emphasize the benefits of Canada’s federation to Quebecers. Emphasizing the importance of effective governance and showcasing federal contributions to Quebec’s cultural promotion are key priorities for Ottawa, as articulated by Joël Lightbound, Carney’s new Quebec liaison.

Recent criticisms by Industry Minister Mélanie Joly against Plamondon’s vision of closer ties with the U.S. have raised eyebrows among Liberals, with some viewing the comments as an unintended boost to Plamondon’s stature on the federal stage. The Bloc Québécois seized this opportunity to criticize the federal government’s approach, warning against resorting to old scare tactics if the separatists gain power in Quebec.

Amidst these developments, Conservatives are also gearing up for the potential referendum, acknowledging the growing significance of the issue in Canadian politics post-2026. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has highlighted the need to embrace Canadian history and recognize Quebec nationalism within the broader framework of Canadian patriotism. The party intends to focus on decentralization and respecting Quebec’s jurisdictional boundaries in their approach.

Concerns persist among federalists regarding the response from English-speaking regions and Western Canada in the event of a referendum, fearing a lack of enthusiasm to accommodate Quebec’s aspirations for sovereignty. The memory of nationwide support for Quebec during the 1995 referendum contrasts with current apprehensions about a potential lack of solidarity from the rest of Canada if a similar situation arises in the future.
