Poilievre’s Political Trajectory: Polls Show Shift

Amidst the fluctuating fortunes of Pierre Poilievre, a comparison of two polls conducted over a span of roughly three-and-a-half years sheds light on his political trajectory.

In September 2022, shortly after assuming leadership of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre garnered support from 35% of Canadians, giving the Conservatives a five-point lead over the Liberals. Despite a mixed reception, with 34% viewing him negatively and 29% positively, Poilievre was perceived more favorably than his Liberal counterpart at the time.

Fast forward to late January 2026, a recent Abacus poll reveals a nuanced shift. Support for the Conservative Party has increased by four points since 2022, with 38% of Canadians holding a positive view of Poilievre. However, the percentage of those with a negative perception of him has also risen to 44%. Conversely, public sentiment towards the government has seen a reversal, with 54% approving of its performance and 31% disapproving. Prime Minister Mark Carney enjoys a 53% positive rating compared to a 30% negative rating.

While 39% of Canadians still lean towards the Conservative Party, if an election were held in late January, 43% would opt for the Liberals. Poilievre’s ascendancy as Conservative leader in 2022 marked a promising moment, but recent developments indicate a shift in the political landscape.

In his recent address at the Conservative convention in Calgary, Poilievre maintained his stance on key issues such as affordability, growth, and governance. While emphasizing his opposition to “identity politics” and “political correctness,” he adopted a more optimistic tone, underscoring the theme of “hope” in his speech.

Despite potential areas of improvement, such as clarity on Canada’s relationship with the United States, Poilievre’s steadfast approach to governance remains unchanged. The decision to reaffirm Poilievre’s leadership within the Conservative Party prompts scrutiny on whether the parliamentary caucus aligns unanimously behind him.

As Poilievre navigates the political landscape, his focus on economic issues and critique of the current government’s performance resonate with Conservative supporters. However, the challenge lies in overcoming perceptions of his leadership style, with comparisons to Trump potentially alienating center-left voters.

The evolving dynamics in Canadian politics underscore the uncertainty surrounding Poilievre’s future prospects. While a resurgence remains a possibility, the altered political climate suggests a challenging path ahead for both Poilievre and the Conservative Party.
