Canada is gearing up for its first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest with high hopes. The country is faced with the decision of whether to opt for a classic emotional ballad akin to Céline Dion’s winning performance in 1988, or to embrace the eccentric and creative flair that Eurovision is known for, like Greece’s recent playful act featuring Akylas in an orange cat costume.
The search for Canada’s representative on this global stage is in full swing, with the portal now open for applicants to showcase their talent. While the competition is open to everyone, CBC/Radio-Canada is specifically seeking performers with a strong track record in the industry.
Several potential contenders have already emerged, including Rêve, a Juno Award-winning artist from Montreal, Talk, who impressed at last year’s Canada Day concert and is a Juno breakthrough artist winner, and bbno$, a two-time Fan Choice Juno recipient.
To qualify for the Eurovision contest, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 or above by May 1, 2027, with the ability to travel internationally and pass standard background checks. The selection process involves submitting videos of live performances and expressing their passion for Eurovision.
Jennifer Dettman, CBC/Radio-Canada’s head of delegation for Eurovision, emphasized the importance of finding artists with a strong digital presence, stage comfort, vocal prowess, and existing European fanbase. The shortlisted performers will be subject to a combination of public and jury voting to determine the final representative for Canada.
The chosen artist will have a significant role in shaping the final song for Eurovision, with the support of established songwriters. The selected individual will undergo an intensive preparation process leading up to the Eurovision Grand Final in May, involving music video production, songwriting, and rehearsals.
While the artists will receive fair compensation for their efforts, the true prize lies in the exposure gained from participating in Eurovision, likened to having “more eyeballs on you than the Super Bowl halftime show.”
