Greetings and welcome to our weekly newsletter focusing on environmental trends and sustainable solutions shaping our world.

Hello, I’m Emily. I’ve observed a growing number of landscaping companies in my area opting to use bicycles or e-bikes with trailers instead of traditional vehicles for transporting their equipment. This sparked my curiosity.

This week’s highlights:

  • Landscaping and bike repair services at your doorstep — sans automobiles
  • The Big Picture: Underwater protest
  • New hub in B.C. for outdoor gear repair and design

Who says you need a truck or van to operate a business involving heavy equipment like lawnmowers, mulch, or bike components? Some savvy businesses are opting for a greener and more cost-effective approach by utilizing bicycles or e-bikes with trailers.

Delivery services for both food and parcels have already embraced e-bikes and cargo e-bikes. In a previous edition, we featured a reader who utilized e-bikes with trailers for cottage renovations.

I recently spoke with various business owners who rely on e-bikes and cargo trailers, as well as a Canadian company that specializes in trailers for such businesses spanning North America and Europe.

Emil Glassbourg, the owner of Fabulous Flora in Toronto, manages to load 12 mulch bags and numerous plants into his Wike landscaping trailer. Despite suggestions from friends to opt for a pickup truck, Glassbourg finds biking more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

Matteo Zammit, co-founder of Matteo’s Mobile Bicycle Repair, employs e-cargo bikes and trailers to reach clients in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo. Zammit emphasizes the benefits of biking over driving, citing reduced costs and increased mobility. His custom-built trailer enhances their repair services.

Both Glassbourg and Zammit stress that beyond the practical advantages, their choice reflects a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

A trailer for every small business

Wike, a Guelph-based company, provides equipment for both the landscaping and bike repair businesses. Madison Soegtrop, overseeing Wike’s operations, highlights the founder’s mission to promote outdoor accessibility without cars through innovative trailer designs.
