The NHL and NHL Players’ Association released a joint statement expressing satisfaction with the trial events held at the new hockey arena for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics. League and union representatives visited the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Italy to observe the progress of the ice surface testing and ongoing construction work on dressing rooms and other facilities. While acknowledging the challenges associated with a new ice surface and a venue still under construction, they affirmed their commitment to addressing all remaining issues promptly.
The statement emphasized that both organizations will closely monitor the situation and provide guidance to ensure that the local organizing committee, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Ice Hockey Federation deliver optimal tournament conditions for the world’s top players. International Ice Hockey Federation president Luc Tardif and officials in Milan have expressed confidence in the participation of NHL players as scheduled for the upcoming Games.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, after receiving reports on the test events, acknowledged the progress made while highlighting the remaining work to be completed. He reassured that efforts are ongoing to address the challenges posed by the venue’s construction status and new ice surface. Bettman expressed the NHL’s willingness to offer assistance and consultation to ensure the successful completion of all necessary tasks in a timely manner.
Bettman anticipates gaining a better understanding of the situation upon his arrival in Milan and emphasized the importance of NHL players competing at the Olympics for the best possible competition. Ultimately, the decision on player participation rests with the IOC and the IIHF, with the NHL committed to supporting the event as invited guests.
