Israeli Forces Launch Assault on Hezbollah Stronghold Amid Ceasefire Talks

Israeli forces have initiated an assault to capture a crucial town in southern Lebanon from Hezbollah militants entrenched there on Monday, intensifying their campaign against the Iran-backed organization on the verge of significant discussions between Israeli and Lebanese representatives. Lebanon’s foreign minister expressed intentions to use direct talks to advocate for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, which has complicated broader diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

However, the upcoming meeting, characterized by Israel’s reluctance to engage in ceasefire talks and Hezbollah’s opposition to negotiations with Israel, has been overshadowed by escalating political tensions in Lebanon. On the ground, the Israeli military has surrounded the town of Bint Jbeil near the border and commenced a ground offensive, with reports indicating that Hezbollah fighters inside are prepared to fiercely defend the area due to its strategic importance as a Hezbollah stronghold and gateway to nearby villages.

An Israeli military spokesperson mentioned that full control of Bint Jbeil is anticipated within days, as only a small number of militants remain in the vicinity. Meanwhile, reports from the International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed a strike on a Red Cross facility in Tyre, southern Lebanon, resulting in one casualty.

Israel’s military reported conducting a strike targeting a “Hezbollah terrorist” in Tyre, which allegedly caused damage to the Red Cross center. Additionally, an Israeli official stated that a Hezbollah rocket struck Nahariyya in northern Israel, causing minor injuries. Israel intercepted several drones and rockets launched from Lebanon throughout the day.

According to a foreign security official in Lebanon, capturing Bint Jbeil would enhance Israel’s control along the southeastern border strip, with plans to extend its presence up to the Litani River. The ongoing assaults in Lebanon, primarily targeting Hezbollah, are not linked to the Iran-U.S. ceasefire, despite previous statements by intermediaries suggesting Lebanon’s inclusion in the truce.

As the conflict persists, the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon is set to facilitate a meeting between Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington, focusing on ceasefire negotiations. Lebanese officials emphasized the importance of seeking a ceasefire through direct talks, aiming to separate Lebanese interests from broader regional dynamics. Opposition from Hezbollah and its allies has complicated the negotiation process, with concerns over civilian casualties and national consensus.
