Foster Malleck from Kitchener, Ontario, continues to impress as a top runner on the international stage. He secured the fifth position in the men’s 2,000m race at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, clocking in at 4 minutes 54.08 seconds. Although his time surpassed Cam Levins’s Canadian indoor best of 4:55.35 from 2014, Athletics Canada does not acknowledge this distance as a record.
Hobbs Kessler of the United States claimed victory with a time of 4:48.79, breaking the world record by over a second, while Grant Fisher, a Calgary-born athlete, finished close behind in 4:49.48. Jake Wightman from Great Britain, the winner of the outdoor 1,500m at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, secured the fourth spot with a time of 4:53.69.
After the race, Malleck, aged 24, expressed his confidence in competing at the highest level and stated his aspirations to reach the success achieved by Kessler and Fisher. Fisher, who hails from Michigan, earned bronze medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Malleck recently participated in the world cross-country championships, covering two kilometers in the opening leg of the 4×2 km relay and finishing just six seconds behind Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot. In outdoor competitions last year, Malleck’s impressive performance in the 1,500m at La Classique de Montréal earned him a place on Canada’s world championship team, positioning him as the second-fastest Canadian in the distance.
Despite facing challenges, such as a fall during the world semifinal heat, Malleck has shown resilience and determination. He captured the outdoor gold in the 1,500m at the NACAC Championships and concluded his successful collegiate career at Boston University with notable achievements, including setting school records in the 1,609m mile and 3,000m events.
Having turned professional and signed with Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore Distance, Malleck is gearing up for future competitions, including the upcoming John Terrier Classic at BU. He aims to meet the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.
In a separate feat, American athlete Josh Hoey set a new men’s 800m short-track world record, clocking an impressive time of 1:42.50 seconds. This achievement adds to his remarkable indoor season, which also included setting a world 600m short-track best record earlier in Boston.
Hoey, already recognized as the second-fastest indoor 800 runner of all time, showcased exceptional performance, supported by his brother Jaxson. The brothers’ strategic pacing and Hoey’s impressive surge towards the finish line exemplified their dedication and teamwork in achieving this milestone. Additionally, another American, Hobbs Kessler, set a new 2000m short-track world record, further highlighting the outstanding performances at the event.
