“Firefighters Sound Alarm on Lithium Battery Fire Hazards”

Firefighters are expressing concerns over the challenging nature of containing hot, rapid, and stubborn fires in lithium batteries, notably in e-bikes stored in residential settings like Toronto and Peterborough, Ont., and in large storage batteries at a solar farm in P.E.I. These incidents have prompted restrictions on electric bikes and cars in various buildings, public transit systems, and ferries, impacting the convenience of those who depend on these modes of transportation. Furthermore, these fires have instilled hesitation in some individuals regarding the adoption of electric vehicles.

As Fire Prevention Week is currently underway with lithium batteries as the central theme, a deeper examination is warranted on the complexities surrounding lithium battery fires and strategies to mitigate associated risks.

According to estimates from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, approximately 1,500 fires ignited by lithium batteries were recorded across 600 communities in Canada last year. The prevalence of these fires is on the rise parallel to the increased use of lithium battery-powered devices. While fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters are most common in residential settings, incidents with electric vehicles and energy storage batteries are relatively rare due to stringent testing and safety features integrated into these systems.

Lithium battery fires can be triggered by factors such as wear and tear, physical damage, overheating from improper charging methods, or exposure to external heat sources. These fires can burn intensely and spread rapidly due to a phenomenon called thermal runaway, resulting in a potentially explosive situation.

One of the critical challenges in handling lithium battery fires is that traditional firefighting methods may not be effective due to the batteries’ unique characteristics. These fires can generate their own oxygen, release toxic substances, and have the potential to reignite even after being seemingly extinguished, posing significant risks to firefighters and the environment.

To reduce the risk of lithium battery fires, it is advised to purchase certified batteries with safety labels, follow proper charging protocols, and recycle damaged batteries at designated drop-off sites. Implementing these preventive measures can help mitigate the dangers associated with lithium battery fires and enhance overall safety standards.
