Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud stood in the mixed zone, answering questions, when a nearby television screen suddenly displayed scores that altered the outcome. The Canadian duo, accustomed to being second to world champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, realized in the moment that they had secured their first national championship.
Overwhelmed with joy and disbelief, Pereira exclaimed, “Oh my God! We won!” before embracing Michaud tightly, who teared up with happiness. The turning point came as Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps faltered in their free skate, paving the way for Pereira and Michaud’s unexpected triumph at the Canadian figure skating championships.
Performing their “Gladiator” routine from the 2023-24 season, Pereira and Michaud scored 135.03 points in their free program, surpassing Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps by 12.02 points, erasing a nine-point deficit from the previous day’s short program. Their total score of 204.14 secured them the gold medal, with Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps settling for silver and Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier claiming bronze.
“This is what we live for,” remarked Michaud, with Pereira adding, “This is unbelievable.” Reflecting on their journey, Pereira emphasized their dedication and passion for the sport, acknowledging the hard work put in over their three-and-a-half-year partnership.
Pereira, 21, and Michaud, 29, teamed up in August 2022 after Michaud’s previous partner retired. Despite the initial skepticism, Michaud had predicted their future success early on. Recalling their beginnings, Pereira shared a humorous anecdote about Michaud’s foresight and their journey to becoming national champions.
Heading to the Milan Cortina Olympics, Pereira and Michaud, regardless of their recent victory, are focused on their next challenge. Meanwhile, Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps are determined to bounce back after a disappointing performance, aiming to fulfill their Olympic aspirations despite Stellato-Dudek’s health struggles.
Despite the setbacks, Stellato-Dudek remained optimistic, emphasizing the positives from their experience and expressing happiness for Pereira and Michaud’s success.
The Canadian figure skating scene is abuzz with anticipation as these talented pairs prepare to represent their country on the international stage.
