Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens Clinches Playoff Spot at Scotties

In a thrilling session at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Mississauga, Ont., Taylour Stevens and her Nova Scotia team savored the moment, lingering on the ice after securing a playoff spot with a remarkable victory. Stevens, along with her teammates Maria Fitzgerald, Alison Umlah, and Cate Fitzgerald, were beaming with joy as they discussed the game-changing shot that propelled them to the next stage of the Canadian women’s curling championship.

The decisive play came when Stevens executed a game-winning shot, scoring three points with a skillful in-off move, leading Nova Scotia to a 9-7 triumph over Ontario’s Hailey Armstrong in the crucial round-robin finale. The intense match captivated the crowd of 2,291 spectators, with Nova Scotia securing the final playoff spot in Pool A alongside Canada’s Kerri Einarson and Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes, while Manitoba’s Beth Peterson, Alberta’s Selena Sturmay, and Nova Scotia’s Christina Black advanced from Pool B.

The game took a dramatic turn in the seventh end when Armstrong’s attempted shot fell short, allowing Stevens to make a strategic play for a four-point advantage. Despite a strong comeback from Ontario in the eighth and ninth ends, Stevens’ missed shot in the ninth gave Armstrong a steal of three points, setting up a tense final end. In a nail-biting finish, Nova Scotia managed to execute a challenging shot in the 10th end to secure the win, making history as both Nova Scotia teams advanced to the playoffs for the first time in Scotties history.

With the playoffs set to begin, the focus now shifts to the upcoming matches, culminating in the final showdown on Sunday. Lawes finished the round-robin stage undefeated at 8-0, followed by Einarson at 7-1. Stevens ended her round-robin campaign with a 6-2 record, while Armstrong concluded at 5-3. The stage is now set for an exciting playoff round to determine the Scotties champion who will go on to represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in Calgary.
