“Texas Attorney General Probes Children’s Apparel Chemical Risks”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into whether Fruit of the Loom and Hanes utilize harmful substances in the production of children’s undergarments. Paxton has issued investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the potential impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. Notably, he has not made any accusations of misconduct against either company.

While Fruit of the Loom and its parent company Berkshire Hathaway have not responded to requests for comment, Gildan, the owner of Hanes, has stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation. Gildan emphasized its adherence to rigorous manufacturing and sourcing standards to align with industry regulations regarding hazardous substances.

Paxton highlighted the industry trend of using synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex to meet consumer demand for affordable clothing. Studies have shown that these synthetic fabrics can release microplastics, while chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and “forever chemicals” commonly found in textile production have been linked to various health issues including cancer, hormone disruption, and infertility.

The attorney general underscored the need to safeguard children from potential harm by ensuring that essential products are free from toxic elements. This investigation follows a similar probe launched in April into Lululemon Athletica’s activewear for the presence of persistent chemicals that do not easily degrade in the environment.

Paxton, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, is currently trailing Democrat James Talarico in polls for the upcoming midterm elections on November 3. The closely watched race has drawn significant attention as both candidates vie for the Senate position.
