“Indigenous Artist Elevates Curling Kits for 2026 Olympics”

Shelby Gagnon, a 2-Spirit Anishinaabe/Cree artist and activist, collaborated with Goldline Curling and Curling Canada for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics, showcasing a unique perspective on Canada’s beloved sport of curling. Through her art, Gagnon highlighted her deep connection to the land and water, emphasizing the importance of environmental protection and Indigenous history.

Goldline Curling, a prominent supplier and manufacturer of curling equipment, worked closely with Gagnon on the “True North” series of curling merchandise. The idea stemmed from a chance encounter between Goldline Curling president Erin Flowers and Gagnon in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Inspired by Gagnon’s work, Flowers proposed incorporating Indigenous art into the curling kits.

The Maple Leaf design on the uniforms, featuring water-inspired lines, symbolized Gagnon’s reverence for nature. The collaboration aimed to not only represent Canada but also convey a meaningful narrative through art. The curling kits prominently displayed Gagnon’s artwork, reinforcing the athletes’ connection to their country.

Gagnon’s artistic vision extended to incorporating elements like water and the hummingbird, symbolizing her commitment to nature conservation. The hummingbird design, with its cultural significance and symbolism of fleeting connections, resonated with both Gagnon and the Olympic athletes.

Despite some manufacturing challenges, including delays in product availability, the unveiling of the uniforms in Halifax received overwhelming praise from the curling community. The success of the project underscored the strong bond between Gagnon, Flowers, and designer Steph Schmid, emphasizing the fusion of art and storytelling in a profound manner.

The collaboration not only showcased Gagnon’s artistic talent but also fostered a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture and environmental stewardship. The symbolic representation of the hummingbird as a harbinger of good luck on a challenging journey encapsulated the spirit of unity and resilience in uncertain times.
