The Liberal Party has officially named Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician and chair of the department of family and community medicine at the University of Toronto, as their candidate for the upcoming federal byelection in University-Rosedale. This riding was previously held by Chrystia Freeland, who recently stepped down.
Dr. Martin gained recognition in 2014 for defending Canada’s health care system before a U.S. Senate committee, showcasing her expertise in the field. Described as a strong advocate by the Liberal Party, she is poised to collaborate with Mark Carney and the party to bolster the economy, safeguard essential programs, and enhance affordability for Canadians.
Replacing Chrystia Freeland, who resigned to advise Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Dr. Martin aims to continue the legacy in University-Rosedale. Freeland, known for her opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, served as deputy prime minister and Canada’s first female finance minister.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has yet to schedule the byelection in University-Rosedale. As per Elections Canada guidelines, the announcement must fall between Jan. 20 and July 8, 2026, with the earliest possible date for the byelection being March 2, 2026.
