“Rep. Swalwell to Resign Amid Sexual Assault Allegations”

U.S. Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell of California made known on Monday his intention to step down from Congress in the wake of multiple accusations of sexual assault, which led to bipartisan demands for his resignation. This marks a rapid decline in the political career of the veteran lawmaker, who was considered a leading candidate for the California gubernatorial race before withdrawing on Sunday following the emergence of the allegations, which he continues to refute.

Expressing regret to his family, staff, and constituents for past errors in judgment, Swalwell stated on social media, “I will contest the grave false accusation made against me. Nevertheless, I must acknowledge and take responsibility for the mistakes I have made.”

Following the allegations of sexual assault against a woman, including incidents in 2019 and 2024 when she was in his employment, Democrats swiftly distanced themselves from Swalwell. The claims were initially reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and later by CNN. The woman alleged that she was incapable of consenting to sexual activity in both situations due to intoxication, and she refrained from reporting to the authorities out of fear of disbelief.

The House ethics committee commenced an inquiry into the allegations on Monday, clarifying that the investigation itself does not imply any violation has taken place. The reported incident in 2024, which transpired in New York, is under scrutiny by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, urging individuals with relevant information to come forward.

Despite his denial of the accusations in a video released on Friday, Swalwell hinted at infidelity in various statements. CNN interviewed other women who accused him of sexual misconduct, including Democratic strategist Ally Sammarco, who alleged receiving a nude photograph from the congressman.

Swalwell, who entered the U.S. House in 2012 representing a district east of San Francisco, previously served as a city council member in Dublin, California. His brief presidential bid in April 2019 ended shortly thereafter, elevating his public profile as a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. He gained attention for his role as one of the House managers during Trump’s impeachment proceedings in early 2021.

In relation to the California gubernatorial race, Swalwell’s sudden departure has left his competitors scrambling to secure his former supporters in a competitive field with numerous contenders. Despite leading in polls, he lost union endorsements and backing from prominent figures following the misconduct allegations.

With a diverse array of candidates from both parties vying in the primary election, the race for governor remains fluid. The top two contenders, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election. Republicans see an opportunity to reclaim the governor’s office after a fifteen-year hiatus.

The response from both Democrats and Republicans calling for Swalwell’s resignation over the weekend prompted the congressman to announce his decision to step down from Congress to avoid distractions from his duties. The potential for expulsion raised concerns of similar actions against other lawmakers, such as Republican Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas, who admitted to an affair with a former staff member who subsequently passed away.

As the political landscape evolves with Swalwell’s resignation, Republicans currently hold 217 seats in the House, with 214 Democrats and one Independent aligned with the Republicans. The upcoming congressional changes include the appointment of Republican Clay Fuller and two impending special elections to fill vacant seats.
