“Huskie Women’s Basketball Team Eyes Revenge Against Calgary Dinos”

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie athletes are braving frigid temperatures in Saskatoon this week as they prepare for practice at the Merlis Besher Centre. Despite the bitter cold, the Huskie women’s basketball team is on an impressive winning streak of 44 consecutive victories spanning over a year and two seasons. Their last defeat dates back to November 2024 when they were swept by the Calgary Dinos.

With a flawless 14-0 record in the current regular season, the Huskies are gearing up to defend their winning streak against the Calgary Dinos on Friday. Forward Téa DeMong expressed excitement about facing the team that handed them their last loss in 2024, mentioning the satisfaction of seeking revenge.

The team boasts seasoned leadership, including five fifth-year players and three fourth-year members. Head coach Lisa Thomaidis, with her extensive 27-year tenure, emphasized the importance of the veterans’ experience in guiding the team to success.

Recognized as one of the top head coaches in U Sports basketball, Thomaidis has led the Huskies to three national championships and has coached national teams for Canada and Germany. Captain Gage Grassick praised the coaching staff for shaping not only great basketball players but also exceptional individuals.

Describing the team as “gritty,” Grassick highlighted their relentless determination and teamwork. The Huskies’ resilience will be tested in upcoming back-to-back games against the formidable Calgary Dinos, who have only suffered two losses this season.

The Huskies, currently ranked first in the Canada West conference, are preparing for intense competition as they aim to maintain their top position. Thomaidis emphasized the importance of strong competition in elevating the team’s performance and readiness for the playoffs.

Looking ahead, Thomaidis believes there is more potential for the Huskies to achieve greater success this season based on their exceptional performance in the previous year. The upcoming games against the Calgary Dinos will take place at the Physical Activity Complex on the U of S campus, with the first game scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Friday followed by the men’s game. Saturday’s action will commence at 5 p.m. CT.
