“Trump Administration Warns Canada on Trade Talks”

The Trump administration is intensifying its pressure on Canada once again, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issues a fresh warning to Prime Minister Mark Carney regarding upcoming trade negotiations. Bessent made these remarks at an event in Washington, D.C., where U.S. President Donald Trump introduced “Trump Accounts,” an investment platform for children.

During an interview with CNBC’s Sara Eisen, Bessent addressed the recent rift between Trump and Carney following the Prime Minister’s attention-grabbing speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Bessent urged Carney to prioritize the interests of the Canadian people over personal political gestures, especially with the USMCA negotiation on the horizon.

Highlighting Carney’s previous anti-American and anti-Trump stance, Bessent cautioned against provoking unnecessary conflicts, given the upcoming trade talks and the economic disparity between the two nations. The Trump administration had imposed tariffs on various Canadian exports to the U.S. in 2025 and is now contemplating significant alterations to the CUSMA agreement.

Bessent also criticized Carney’s transition from a technocrat to a politician, citing historical failures in such shifts. These comments follow Bessent’s claim that Carney had backtracked on his Davos statements during a recent phone call with Trump, which Carney promptly denied.

The ongoing tension between Carney and the U.S. officials escalated further as Trump rescinded Carney’s invitation to join the “Board of Peace” and threatened Canada with a 100% tariff on all goods in case of a deal with China. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dismissed Carney’s speech as political noise, expressing frustration over Canada’s trade stance.

Carney, on the other hand, believes that the backlash from the Trump administration should be seen in light of the forthcoming CUSMA renegotiations. The three countries involved – Canada, the U.S., and Mexico – must decide on the agreement’s fate by July 1, with discussions already underway between the U.S. and Mexico for potential reforms to the CUSMA terms. Meanwhile, formal talks between Canada and the U.S. are pending.
