“Toronto Awaits Ontario’s $97M Funding for FIFA World Cup”

Toronto is eagerly awaiting confirmation from the Ontario government regarding the $97 million in funding committed for the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches to be held at BMO Field, soon to be known as Toronto Stadium. The city’s FIFA secretariat presented an update on funding and revenue to the World Cup subcommittee, stating that negotiations are ongoing for the province’s funding agreement.

With a total budget of $380 million for the six matches, the city has pledged nearly $180 million, and the federal government has committed around $104 million, leaving the remaining portion to be covered by the province. City Councilor Paul Ainslie urged the Ontario government to fulfill its funding commitment, emphasizing the economic benefits that the event will bring to both the provincial and federal governments through tax revenue.

FIFA projects that Toronto will experience a positive economic impact of $1.3 billion from hosting the matches. Councilor Amber Morley expressed confidence that the Ontario government will meet its obligations as a key partner in hosting the tournament and highlighted the potential tax benefits from visitor spending.

While the city had expected the province’s contribution to be in cash, it has been informed that part of it will be in the form of services such as policing, transportation, and healthcare. Discussions between the city and the province are ongoing to determine the valuation of these services. If the cash component from the province falls below $97 million, the city will explore alternative funding sources or cost-saving measures.

Mayor Olivia Chow has raised concerns about the city’s financial capacity to cover additional World Cup expenses. Discussions with the province are ongoing to address funding challenges and ensure a successful event.
