“Aquadeo Community Seeks Shelter Amid Red Tornado Warnings”

For the second consecutive night, over 100 individuals, including children and pets, sought shelter in the basement of a community hall as red tornado warnings prompted action on Saturday night. Chris Stewart recounted the experience of dining in Aquadeo, Sask., when the fire alarm disrupted the evening. Aquadeo is situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake. Despite initial concerns from some children, the atmosphere remained calm as everyone gathered in the hall’s basement. The crowd exceeded 100 people on both nights.

Environment Canada issued tornado warnings for at least twelve communities in west-central Saskatchewan, such as Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, due to a slow-moving system colliding with another system from Alberta. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski stated that while such occurrences are uncommon, they are not out of the ordinary.

Severe weather hit Saskatchewan on Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall, hail ranging from ping-pong to golf ball size near Neilburg, and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h near North Battleford. Although no tornadoes touched down on Saturday, there were confirmed tornado touchdowns on Friday.

Shannon Risling described witnessing a tornado touch down near Jackfish Lake on Friday while enjoying the beach with her daughter. After observing the tornado form and touch down twice, she promptly reported the sighting to Environment Canada.

Looking ahead, Ziolkowski predicted a return to calmer conditions in the Prairies with a high-pressure ridge. By Sunday morning, Chris Stewart was back on the water, enjoying clear skies and a day of fishing.

The community of Aquadeo and surrounding areas experienced turbulent weather over the weekend, highlighting the importance of preparedness and vigilance during severe weather events.
