“Toronto Man Impersonates Pilot for Free Flights”

In a reminiscent tale that echoes the plot of the 2002 film “Catch Me If You Can,” a Toronto man faces charges of impersonating a commercial pilot to fly for free on multiple airlines. Dallas Pokornik, a former flight attendant, allegedly used a fake employee ID to access hundreds of complimentary flights by requesting a jump seat in the cockpit. The U.S. Attorney General’s Office in Hawaii revealed that Pokornik was arrested in Panama in January and has pleaded not guilty to wire fraud charges.

Court documents indicate that Pokornik exploited his previous employment with a Toronto-based airline from 2017 to 2019 to fraudulently obtain pilot and flight attendant tickets from other airlines. Despite claiming to still be an employee of the Toronto airline, he allegedly knew this representation was false.

The implicated airlines, based in Honolulu, Chicago, and Fort Worth, Texas, have not yet commented on the case. Pokornik, if convicted, could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison along with a substantial fine and supervised release. The defendant’s legal representation, as listed in court documents, has not responded to media inquiries.

This incident mirrors a previous case where a Florida man was convicted of similar actions, obtaining over 120 free flights by posing as a flight attendant on multiple airline carriers. Such cases underscore the vulnerabilities in airline security protocols and the need for heightened vigilance in preventing fraudulent activities within the aviation industry.
