“Qatar Pledges Strategic Investments in Canada”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Qatar has pledged substantial strategic investments towards major building projects in Canada. This investment is expected to expedite project completion, enhance the energy sector, and generate employment opportunities for Canadians. Carney made these remarks at a press conference held in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Describing this development as a pivotal moment in bilateral relations, Carney highlighted that the two nations will also focus on strengthening cultural ties between their people. This initiative includes expanding direct flight connections from Canada to Qatar to promote tourism and business activities.

Emphasizing the importance of mutual cultural understanding, Carney stated, “When individuals from different countries are familiar with each other’s cultures and viewpoints, they gain enrichment and foster trust. This leads to a desire to collaborate and build together.”

Carney expressed Canada’s intention to finalize the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by this summer, following years of stalled negotiations. Additionally, Canada plans to deploy a defense attaché in Doha to enhance defense partnerships between the two countries.

Earlier on the same day, Carney received an official welcome and held discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Prime Minister extended an invitation for the Emir to visit Canada later this year, as they discussed expanding Qatar-Canada relations and committed to ongoing communication.

Carney’s visit aims to bolster trade and collaborations in artificial intelligence, infrastructure, energy, and defense sectors with Qatar. This trip follows meetings in Beijing with political and business leaders to strengthen ties with China, aligning with the government’s strategy to diversify trade relationships beyond traditional allies like the United States.

The visit also featured a ceremonial reception with a display of Qatari traditions, including camel riders and horse-mounted guards, welcoming Carney outside the Amiri Diwan, Qatari government’s headquarters. Inside, Canadian ministers, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, engaged in discussions in an ornate waiting area.

The visit will culminate with Carney attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, marking the conclusion of his nine-day international tour.
