Madeline Schizas delivered a strong message to challengers eyeing her championship title and proved her determination with a fourth win at the Canadian figure skating championships. This victory further solidified her claim to the sole women’s singles entry for the Milan Cortina Olympic Games. In response to competitors like Gabrielle Daleman attempting to dethrone her, Schizas had boldly stated that she would not allow anyone else to represent Canada at the Olympics. Her performance on Sunday showcased her resolve, as she scored 135.94 points in the free skate to “Butterfly Lovers Concerto,” securing a total of 200.86 points and moving from fourth place to first.
Daleman, aiming to become the first Canadian women’s singles skater to participate in three Olympics, earned the silver medal with 195.35 points despite facing challenges due to past injuries. Expressing a mix of emotions post-event, Daleman acknowledged the pressure and commended Schizas’ exceptional performance.
Additionally, 16-year-old Minsol Kwon from South Korea claimed the bronze medal with a score of 193.18 points. Kwon, currently allowed to skate in Canada domestically but not internationally, showcased her talent in the competition.
In the ice dance category, Gilles and Poirier secured their fifth Canadian title with a brilliant performance in the “Vincent” free dance routine. Achieving a total score of 231.05 points, they surpassed their own Canadian record and demonstrated their excellence in the sport.
The event also saw Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac clinching the bronze medal, while Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer narrowly missed out on the final Olympic spot. The skating competition featured various emotional moments, highlighting the dedication and hard work of all participants.
With these remarkable performances, the Canadian figure skating championships set the stage for the country’s representation at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Canada’s Olympic team, comprising seven entries across different categories, was set to be announced by Skate Canada on Sunday evening, with preparations underway for the prestigious international event.
