Hip-Hop Icon Rob Base Dies at 59

Rob Base, a prominent figure in the world of hip-hop as one part of the renowned duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away at the age of 59 after a valiant fight against cancer. Born Robert Ginyard, he gained widespread recognition for the hit track “It Takes Two” in 1988, which seamlessly fused elements of hip-hop and house music, playing a pivotal role in popularizing both genres.

In an official statement shared on his Instagram account following his demise, it was highlighted that Rob’s music, vibrant persona, and enduring impact resonated with countless individuals worldwide. Described as a caring father, devoted family man, trusted friend, and influential creative talent, his legacy is set to endure indefinitely.

Tragically, his musical partner Rodney (Skip) Bryce, who performed as DJ E-Z Rock, passed away in 2014 at the age of 46 due to complications stemming from diabetes. The duo’s musical journey began as childhood friends in Harlem, New York, where their shared admiration for the success of the Crash Crew, a fellow Harlem-based group, spurred them to pursue a career in music. Their affiliation with Profile Records in 1987 marked a significant milestone as one of the pioneering hip-hop labels of the era.

Shortly thereafter, their iconic track “It Takes Two” made a splash on the Billboard Hot 100, soaring to No. 3 on the Hot Dance/Club Songs chart. This chart-topping sensation has since been sampled by various artists, including Snoop Dogg and the Black Eyed Peas, and featured in multiple cinematic productions. Notably, the track achieved platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Their subsequent release, “Get on the Dance Floor,” achieved comparable success on the club songs chart, further solidifying their impact on the music scene.
