Zach Galifianakis, known for his Hollywood stardom, has ventured into a new project upon moving to a southern region of British Columbia — a gardening show titled “This is a Gardening Show.” The documentary series, set to debut on Netflix in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22, showcases interviews with farmers and children throughout Vancouver Island.
Galifianakis, who has been a hobby gardener for 25 years, expressed his motivation for the show as a means to share his love for gardening with others. He emphasized the rich tradition of skilled gardeners on Vancouver Island and his hope to inspire the younger generation to carry on this legacy.
The series, which also addresses concerns about food sources for children, features engaging conversations with students from Brooklyn Elementary School in Comox. Galifianakis combines his signature off-beat humor with practical advice on growing fruits and vegetables, aiming to educate and prepare young viewers for potential climate challenges.
Moreover, the show highlights adult farmers and gardeners from the southern British Columbia islands, including Arzeena Hamir from Amara Farm in the Comox Valley. Hamir, a food security advocate, believes that the show’s focus on gardening is timely and essential given current global circumstances, such as rising food costs.
As the premiere approaches, Galifianakis is concentrating on nurturing his own island garden, with a special interest in cultivating his prized sugar pumpkins. He humorously shared his ambition to make 30 pumpkin pies for Christmas, citing his preference for graham cracker crust and jokingly avoiding any political discussions related to pumpkin pie preferences.
