“Spotify Introduces ‘Verified by Spotify’ Badge for Authentic Artists”

The latest update on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” introduces a new feature in the app. Spotify now displays a “Verified by Spotify” badge to distinguish genuine artists from AI-generated music creators. This move comes as AI-generated music gains popularity on the platform, accumulating millions of streams.

According to Spotify’s website, artists eligible for the badge must demonstrate consistent listener engagement over time and have a notable presence both on and off the platform. This may include active social media accounts, live performance schedules, and merchandise sales.

To receive verification, artists need at least 10,000 active listeners for three consecutive months. Spotify also considers artists who have made significant contributions to music culture or are gaining cultural momentum and relevance.

The Canadian Independent Music Association’s President, Andrew Cash, views the badge as a necessary tool to differentiate human-made music from AI creations. However, he expresses concerns that Spotify’s criteria could create obstacles for emerging independent artists seeking wider recognition.

Major artists like Madonna, BTS, and Bad Bunny have already obtained the green badge, including Canadian talents such as The Beaches, Cameron Whitcomb, and Jeremy Dutcher. Yet, notable artists like Joni Mitchell and Celia Cruz are among those yet to be verified.

Spotify plans to roll out badges gradually over the coming weeks and will continue verifying artists on an ongoing basis. The company clarified that podcasts, including popular ones like The Joe Rogan Experience, are not currently eligible for verification.

Similar to social media platforms, Spotify aims to maintain the authenticity of artists through verification without monetizing the process. However, concerns persist regarding potential implications for smaller artists facing challenges in the industry.

Spotify’s verification system is still evolving, and certain guidelines, such as excluding AI-generated work for approval, may undergo changes. Other platforms like Apple Music and Deezer have also adopted measures to help users identify AI-generated content in music.

In response to the rise of AI-generated music, artists like Taylor Swift are taking legal steps to protect their music and image from potential misuse through artificial intelligence. Experts emphasize the importance of artists leveraging technology to enhance their creative endeavors.
