“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Swings to $1.67B Worldwide

“The Odyssey” continues to dominate the global box office, raking in $1.1 billion US since its release on July 17, making it director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous hits like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.” Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” fell just short of the billion-dollar mark with around $975 million US in earnings.

In a surprising turn of events, Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” exceeded expectations by earning $1.67 billion US worldwide, with a staggering $360 million US on its opening weekend. This achievement places it among the highest-grossing movies of all time and the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion US, following closely behind “Avengers: Endgame.”

Both “The Odyssey” and “Brand New Day” have contributed to a resurgence in the box office, with Hollywood experiencing an 18.5% increase in ticket sales compared to the previous year. The industry is on track for a remarkable year, with already five movies surpassing the $1 billion US mark in 2026.

Despite its success, “The Odyssey” is set to expand its reach further with its upcoming release in China, where it is expected to draw significant interest. The movie, shot entirely in IMAX format, has proven to be a game-changer, becoming IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release with $147.3 million US in earnings on IMAX screens.

As Hollywood anticipates reaching a summer theatrical revenue of $4 billion US, analysts project a thriving season reminiscent of pre-pandemic levels, with 2023 being the only other summer to surpass this milestone. The industry’s bounce back is evident, with the ongoing success of blockbuster films like “The Odyssey” and “Brand New Day.”
