Southern British Columbia is facing the likelihood of a parched summer, as indicated by the most recent data provided by the provincial authorities. The latest report from the River Forecast Centre of British Columbia highlights that a combination of scant snowpack, premature snowmelt, and high temperatures is heightening the threat of drought, particularly in the southern regions. The bulletin underscores the significance of spring weather in exacerbating concerns about summer drought conditions.
The River Forecast Centre, responsible for monitoring water supply in the province, reports that precipitation levels were lower than usual throughout British Columbia in April, with a notable deficit in the southern areas. Furthermore, above-average temperatures, exceeding normal levels by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius, hastened the melting of snow, resulting in a diminished snowpack.
Following the dry and warm weather experienced in April, similar conditions persisted into the initial week of May. As of May 1, diverse regions in British Columbia exhibited a wide spectrum of snowpack conditions ranging from well above average to well below. By the same date, approximately 15 percent of the annual snowpack had already melted, a substantially higher rate compared to the average of six percent by early May. As of May 7, the snowpack had decreased by 28 percent.
Environment Canada’s forecast anticipates above-normal temperatures in British Columbia from May through July. Some experts also suggest the likelihood of a “super” El Niño event this year, which typically brings warmer temperatures, potentially exacerbating drought conditions.
The B.C. Wildfire Service has imposed restrictions on open fires in various parts of the province due to the drying out of vegetation and wildfire fuel caused by recent warm weather. With windy conditions expected over the weekend, there is concern that any new wildfires could rapidly escalate. As of May 8 at 1:30 p.m. PT, there are currently 25 wildfires burning across the province, with 76 percent of them suspected to be human-caused, as any wildfire not initiated by lightning is classified.
