Kristýna Kaltounková and Anne Cherkowski both found the net, while Kayle Osborne made 31 saves to lead the New York Sirens to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Victoire during the PWHL’s Takeover Tour at Capital One Arena. Montreal, with a record of 5-2-0-5, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
The game, held in Washington, D.C., drew an announced attendance of 17,228 spectators, setting a new record for in-arena attendance at a women’s hockey game in the United States. The previous attendance record of 16,014 fans was established on November 28 during the inaugural home game for the Seattle Torrent.
Sarah Fillier contributed two assists for New York (7-0-1-5), who have won five of their last six games. The Sirens currently have 22 points, trailing league-leading Boston by four points and holding a one-point lead over third-place Minnesota.
Kaltounková, the top overall pick in the 2025 PWHL draft, has tallied nine goals this season, tying with Minnesota’s Kendall Coyne Schofield for the league’s highest goal scorer. Maggie Flaherty managed to score a power-play goal for the Victoire late in the first period.
Kaltounková broke the deadlock just 84 seconds into the game by slamming home a rebound off a shot by Fillier. Despite their struggles on power plays this season, New York managed to convert this opportunity after failing on their previous nine attempts, making them 5 of 40 with an extra skater.
Cherkowski gave the Sirens a 2-1 advantage with 5:13 remaining in the second period. A faceoff won by Fillier led to a wrist shot by Levis, which Cherkowski redirected over the glove-side shoulder of goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens for her first career goal.
Desbiens made 25 saves for the Victoire. In their previous encounters, Montreal defeated New York 4-0 in Montreal on November 25, but New York avenged the loss with a 4-3 home victory on January 2, where Osborne made a career-high 43 saves.
Montreal’s next game is against Minnesota on Wednesday, while New York will host Ottawa on Tuesday.
