One method to gauge affordability is the “market basket measure,” which assesses the cost of essential goods for a basic standard of living. British Columbia has the highest cost, with Alberta following closely. Quebec, on the other hand, boasts the lowest cost of living.
Income also plays a crucial role, with regions offering higher wages usually having higher costs, as noted by Charles St-Arnaud, chief economist at Servus Credit Union. Despite this, disposable incomes in Alberta remain higher than in other provinces, although the gap is narrowing.
Housing, a significant expense for most Canadians, varies across cities. While Vancouver and Toronto are known for high property prices, Edmonton and Calgary stand out as more affordable markets. Alberta remains a top choice for relocation, leading in residential construction and offering a favorable regulatory environment for building.
The cost of groceries has risen nationwide, with relatively minor regional variations. Quebec stands out for higher food expenses due to lower costs in other categories. Transportation expenses, such as car insurance, can differ significantly between provinces. While Alberta offers cheaper premiums, Ontario faces the highest average claim costs.
