“Paralympians Call for Weather Changes at 2026 Games”

Paralympians at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games have encountered challenges like skiing in slush, navigating sticky snowboarding areas, and coping with heat issues. They have described the conditions as challenging, extremely difficult, and brutal.

Athletes, including Kurt Oatway from Canada, have expressed concerns about the warm weather affecting the competitions. Oatway suggested that the Games should be held a month earlier to avoid the soft and slushy snow conditions that impact the quality of the events.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is considering moving the Olympic and Paralympic Games earlier due to the recurring logistical challenges caused by warm weather. There have been ongoing discussions about rescheduling or merging the Paralympics to enhance visibility and address the climate-related issues faced by athletes.

Athletes like U.S. Para snowboarder Amy Purdy have highlighted the difficulties faced by Paralympians competing in March, which now coincides with spring in many host countries, making it challenging for winter sports athletes, particularly those with disabilities.

The impact of climate change on winter sports events has been evident, with concerns raised over the decreasing number of suitable host locations for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Researchers have emphasized the urgency of adapting the Games to address the changing climate conditions.

Suggestions to address the challenges posed by warm weather conditions include shifting the Games earlier by a few weeks to optimize the snow conditions and improve the overall experience for athletes. The possibility of merging the events in February has been discussed to enhance sponsorship and visibility for the Paralympics while ensuring they receive adequate recognition.

Moving forward, stakeholders are exploring options to better align the scheduling of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics to mitigate the impact of climate change and provide a more conducive environment for athletes to showcase their abilities under optimal conditions.
