Osoyoos Lake in British Columbia’s South Okanagan, a popular spot for beachgoers, has reached its lowest water level in almost four decades. The lake was approximately 30 centimeters below the usual level for early March. Due to the low water level, the Town of Osoyoos has temporarily closed its powerboat boat launch to prevent damage to the shoreline infrastructure. Mayor Sue McKortoff emphasized the need to protect the marina from potential harm at the current low level to avoid costly repairs.
Situated between the Canada-U.S. border, Osoyoos Lake is governed by the U.S-Canada Boundary Waters Treaty. Factors such as a low snowpack, mild winter, and reduced inflows have led to the below-average lake levels. David Hutchinson, chair of the Canadian section of the International Osoyoos Lake Board of Control, stated that Okanagan Lake’s water levels, extending from Vernon to Penticton, also impact Osoyoos Lake.
The lake is part of the Okanagan Lake Regulation System, managed by a system of dams and structures that regulate water flow downstream into the U.S. Hutchinson highlighted the strategic water management efforts to maintain target elevations in Okanagan Lake for late summer and early fall water supply.
Although Osoyoos Lake’s levels have been increasing steadily, the Washington State Department of Ecology, responsible for the Zosel Dam operation, has been authorized by the International Joint Commission to raise the lake’s water level. This decision is expected to bring the water level back to a normal range by the end of the month.
Despite the challenges with water levels, Osoyoos Lake remains open for tourists, except for those needing a boat launch. Mayor McKortoff mentioned that there is more beach visible due to the lower water level. She urged visitors to be cautious about the water levels and potential risks, emphasizing the importance of awareness and safety.
Officials are optimistic that powerboating activities will resume on Osoyoos Lake as water levels continue to rise, aiming for a return by the peak summer season.
