Swiss skiing sensation Marco Odermatt showcased his dominance once again by clinching a historic fifth consecutive victory at the prestigious Adelboden giant slalom event on Saturday. Despite challenging weather conditions with snowfall and reduced visibility, Olympic giant slalom champion Odermatt successfully defended his first-run lead, securing the win with a 0.49-second margin over Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who finished in second place. France’s Leo Anguenot claimed the third spot, trailing by 0.68 seconds.
Pinheiro Braathen graciously acknowledged Odermatt’s prowess, referring to him as the “king of the hill” and expressing admiration for the Swiss skier’s performance. Odermatt’s triumph at Adelboden marked his fifth consecutive victory since 2022, surpassing the legendary Ingemar Stenmark’s four-win streak from 1979 to 1982.
In a post-race interview, Odermatt expressed his deep connection to Adelboden, describing it as his “first love” and a special place that holds a significant place in his heart. The enthusiastic crowd of approximately 25,000 spectators added to the atmosphere, spurring Odermatt to push himself to the limits with their unwavering support.
The day’s events began with a moment of silence to honor the victims of a tragic fire in a nearby location, setting a somber tone before the thrilling races unfolded. Odermatt’s outstanding performance this season has solidified his status as a dominant force in the World Cup, with a substantial lead in race points over his closest competitor, Pinheiro Braathen.
The Adelboden giant slalom, a longstanding tradition in the World Cup calendar since 1967, has witnessed remarkable ski talents over the years, including past winners like Jean-Claude Killy. The challenging Chuenisbaergli course, known for its undulating terrain and thrilling final slope, provides a captivating backdrop for the intense competition.
As the focus shifts to the upcoming slalom event, Odermatt, with his impressive form, has decided to sit out, while Pinheiro Braathen remains a strong contender, aiming to replicate his success from the previous year.
