Manitoba NDP Member of Parliament Leah Gazan has officially thrown her support behind documentary filmmaker Avi Lewis for the leadership of the party, becoming the first current MP to endorse a candidate. Gazan believes that Lewis is well-equipped to revitalize the party and address the challenges posed by the high cost of living and the climate crisis. Renowned environmentalist David Suzuki also endorsed Lewis recently.
Leading up to the membership deadline on January 28, several other candidates vying for the NDP leadership have garnered support from notable figures. Former Ontario MP Charlie Angus has endorsed Alberta MP Heather McPherson, emphasizing the need for experienced leadership in rebuilding the party. Meanwhile, union leader Rob Ashton has received the backing of the United Steelworkers union, a key partner of the NDP with strong political organizing capabilities.
