Maritime Launch Services Ltd., a company based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has partnered with a German aerospace firm, Isar Aerospace, to establish a dedicated complex for its Spectrum rocket at a site near Canso, N.S., on the Eastern Shore. Isar Aerospace, which has already set up its initial launch site in Norway, has formed a new Canadian subsidiary called Isar Aerospace Canada Inc.
Isar’s two-stage rocket is specifically designed to transport small and medium-sized satellites into space. According to Alexandre Dalloneau, Isar’s vice-president of mission and launch operations, the lack of independent access to launch capacity remains a critical bottleneck in defense and intelligence worldwide. Isar aims to address this issue by bringing complete launch capability to sovereign nations, with Canada being the next target on their roadmap.
Canada currently relies on the United States for launching its space projects as it lacks the capability to do so independently. Recognizing the importance of space launches as a sovereign capability, the Canadian government has allocated $183 million over the next three years to establish space launch capabilities, as outlined in the country’s defense industrial strategy.
Maritime Launch’s project, named Spaceport Nova Scotia, is envisioned to provide launch infrastructure for commercial, civil, and defense clients. Once operational, it is poised to become Canada’s inaugural commercial launch pad. Isar plans to invest approximately $100 million in preparing the launch pad as a tenant. Construction is set to commence this year, with space launches expected by 2028 and a target of up to 40 launches annually at the site by 2029.
The ten-year, $200 million lease agreement between the federal government and Maritime Launch enables Canada to independently launch satellites into orbit. This move is crucial as around 20% of the Canadian economy relies on satellite technology for various sectors such as banking and telecommunications.
During a NATO defense industry summit in Turkey, Maritime Launch CEO Stephen Matier finalized the deal with Isar. He mentioned that out of the four launch pads being developed, three are already allocated to Isar, the federal government, and Montreal-based aerospace company Reaction Dynamics. Matier disclosed ongoing discussions with potential clients for the fourth pad while reserving the development of a fifth pad for future endeavors.
The collaboration between Isar Aerospace and Maritime Launch aligns with Canada’s recent decision to join NATO Starlift, a project aimed at establishing a space launch network to facilitate rapid payload deployment for allied nations. Matier emphasized that such partnerships between NATO-allied countries exemplify collective efforts in advancing space activities and technology.
