Lost Tortoise Found 20km Away in Canadian Prairie

A hefty African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered meandering slowly near a large wetland in the Canadian prairie, leaving onlookers puzzled at her unexpected presence at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake region. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, expressed astonishment at the sight of Molly, weighing 36 kilograms and originating from the Sahara desert, far from her natural habitat.

After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, Malchuk and her team embarked on a search and rescue mission, initially dismissing the sightings as possibly being a common snapping turtle native to Manitoba. However, a sighting logged on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of Molly, prompting the team to locate and secure the tortoise swiftly.

Molly, who had strayed 20 kilometers from her home, was found in the parking lot of Oak Hammock Marsh, where staff provided her with care, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals while arranging for her safe return home. The tortoise was reunited with her family on July 22 after her owners were identified through a social media post. Despite Molly’s escape seemingly facilitated by a gap in her family’s backyard fence, the mystery of her journey to the marsh remains unanswered.

Speculations abound as to how Molly managed to traverse the considerable distance to the wetland, with theories ranging from a mistaken relocation by a well-intentioned individual to the tortoise’s own determined trek. The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh marveled at Molly’s unlikely adventure, highlighting the enigmatic nature of her odyssey.
