Elana Woldenberg Ruffman, the vice president of marketing at Learning Resources, expressed her satisfaction with the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down President Trump’s global tariffs. Learning Resources, a family-owned educational toy company based in Illinois, was the lead plaintiff in the case, challenging the tariffs imposed by Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) without congressional approval.
In a 6-3 decision, the judges deemed Trump’s unilateral imposition of tariffs illegal, leading to the president’s criticism of the ruling as “unpatriotic” and accusing the judges of being “disloyal to our nation.” Trump also referred to the plaintiffs, including Learning Resources, as “sleazebags.”
Ruffman highlighted the significance of the case, emphasizing that they took legal action to protect their employees and ensure the legality of the tariffs. She noted the historical context of taxation without representation, linking it to the case’s implications.
Regarding Trump’s announcement of a new 10% global tariff through an executive order, Ruffman emphasized the negative impact of tariffs as regressive taxes and expressed their preference for less taxation to support community investment and job creation. The company awaits further developments but believes that fewer tariffs and taxes will benefit them.
The Supreme Court’s decision did not address the issue of potential refunds for tariff payments. Ruffman mentioned that the matter has been remanded to a lower court, and they anticipate receiving refunds for the tariff payments made, totaling around $14 million in 2025.
