Justin Timberlake Fights Release of DUI Arrest Video

Justin Timberlake has taken legal action to prevent the release of police body-camera footage from his arrest for driving under the influence in the Hamptons in 2024. Timberlake’s legal team filed a lawsuit against the village of Sag Harbor and its police department, arguing that the video’s disclosure would invade his privacy, exposing personal and sensitive information. They claimed that releasing the footage could severely damage Timberlake’s reputation, subjecting him to public ridicule and harassment.

The lawsuit detailed that the footage captured Timberlake in a vulnerable state during an encounter with law enforcement, revealing intimate details of his appearance, behavior, speech, and actions during sobriety tests, arrest, and subsequent confinement. Following a court hearing in Riverhead, N.Y., the judge deferred a ruling and urged both parties to explore a potential resolution before reconvening later in the week.

In September 2024, Timberlake, a former NSYNC member turned solo artist and actor, admitted guilt to impaired driving. According to police reports, he was arrested after disregarding a stop sign, swerving out of his lane, and displaying signs of intoxication. Timberlake informed officers that he had consumed one martini and was following friends back to Sag Harbor, a historic village in the Hamptons.

As part of his plea deal, Timberlake agreed to deliver a public service message cautioning against drunk driving, which reduced his initial charge to a noncriminal traffic violation. He was fined $500, assigned 25 hours of community service, and had his license suspended for 90 days. Reflecting on his actions, Timberlake admitted his mistake and expressed hope that others would learn from it.

Timberlake’s legal team received notice that the village planned to release edited portions of the eight-hour footage, covering his stop, police interaction, sobriety tests, and arrest, to comply with public record requests. Media outlets, including The Associated Press, had requested access to the video. Sag Harbor’s mayor emphasized the village’s commitment to transparency while ensuring that the footage did not jeopardize public safety or law enforcement.

The state’s public records law generally mandates the disclosure of police body-camera footage, prompting the village to review and prepare for the footage’s release. Despite the legal proceedings and public scrutiny, Timberlake has acknowledged his error and expressed a desire for his experience to serve as a cautionary tale.
