Reports of brush fires in Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula have prompted the Heart’s Content Volunteer Fire Department to impose a fire ban in their community and New Perlican ahead of the wildfire season. Heart’s Content fire chief, Kyle Piercey, aims to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating wildfires that led to evacuations and the destruction of numerous structures in the region.
Following recent incidents in neighboring communities, such as a brush fire in Port de Grave that encroached on homes, other fire departments in Conception Bay have also responded to multiple brush fires, some originating from out-of-control barrel fires.
Chief Piercey decided to enforce the fire ban after witnessing these incidents, stating that given the local weather conditions, it was necessary to prohibit all brush fires and open pit fires. The ban excludes propane barbecues and fireplaces, with Piercey emphasizing that it will remain in effect until further notice. Individuals seeking to burn brush must obtain a permit from the forestry department.
Expressing concerns about the upcoming wildfire season, Piercey stressed the importance of early preventive measures, stating, “It’s better to be safe early than too late.” Mayor Glenda Hiscock of Heart’s Content recalled the fear of a wildfire coming within 10 kilometers of the town, highlighting the community’s reliance on volunteer firefighters who dedicated themselves to protecting the area during last year’s emergencies.
Hiscock emphasized the proactive approach of the fire department this year, noting the sacrifices made by volunteers in the previous wildfire season. She stated, “Safety is everything,” endorsing the department’s preemptive actions based on the experiences of the past year.
