A soldier from Hamilton who passed away in Latvia last week will be remembered at a repatriation event on Tuesday. Sebastian Halmagean, aged 24, lost his life near Riga, Latvia, as confirmed by Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND), with the circumstances surrounding his demise currently under investigation.
The DND announced that the repatriation ceremony will take place at 8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton in Quinte West, Ontario, on Tuesday afternoon. The arrival of Halmagean’s remains is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET, with the ceremony set to commence between 2:45 and 3 p.m.
Following the ceremony, a motorcade will travel to Toronto via the Highway of Heroes, according to the DND. Ned Kuruc, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Stoney Creek, paid tribute to Halmagean during a House of Commons session on Monday, expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier.
Kuruc emotionally stated, “I solemnly rise in the House today to offer my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Canadian Armed Forces Gunner Sebastian Halmagean or as we knew him, Sebi.” He further described Halmagean as a proud patriot who advocated for more young Canadians to enlist in the Armed Forces, emphasizing his love for the country and the military.
Halmagean, originally from Hamilton and stationed at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B., was fulfilling his childhood aspirations during his inaugural mission in Latvia before the tragic incident occurred. His father, Alin Halmagean, revealed that Sebastian was deeply proud to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces, treasuring his role and responsibilities as a soldier.
